Medical Acupuncture
Medical Acupuncture is acupuncture performed by a doctor trained and licensed in Western medicine who has also had thorough training in acupuncture as a specialty.
Many patients are dissatisfied with Western medicine’s tendency to use a compartmentalized approach to ones’ body systems and to rely on pharmaceutical products. Acupuncture treats acute and chronic conditions and can be used as a preventative measure. Acupuncture maintains a whole-body perspective that seeks to restore a healthy balance within your body to improve your total health and well-being.
Acupuncture is a form of complementary medicine that involves insertion of thin, hair-like sterile needles into specific points along channels or meridians of energy within the body. It can be used to treat a range of health conditions by altering and adjusting the body’s energy flow to promote self healing.
According to the World Health Organization, there are a number of disorders that can benefit from acupuncture treatments, including:
- Infections: colds, influenza, bronchitis, hepatitis
- Internal: asthma, colitis, constipation, diabetes, diarrhea, hemorrhoids, high blood pressure, hypoglycemia, indigestion, ulcer
- Dermatological: eczema, acne, herpes, rosacea
- Eyes/Ears/Nose/Throat: deafness, dizziness, earaches, hay fever, Meniere’s disease, poor eyesight, ringing in the ear, sinus infection, sore throat
- Genito-Urinary/Reproductive: impotence, infertility, irregular periods and cramps, morning sickness, pelvic inflammatory disease (PID), pre-menstrual syndrome (PMS), vaginitis
- Mental/Emotional: anxiety, depression, insomnia, stress
- Musculoskeletal/Neurological: arthritis, back pain, Bell’s palsy, bursitis, cerebral palsy, frozen shoulder, headaches, Meniere’s disease, neuralgia, sciatica, sprains, stiff neck, stroke, tendonitis, tennis elbow, trigeminal neuralgia
In addition to the above ailments, acupuncture has been shown to help alleviate the symptoms of menopause, reduce the side effects of chemotherapy, relieve acute and chronic pain, and aid in smoking cessation and weight loss.

In their own words . . .
Environment, Wait Time, Quality, Customer Service: PERFECTION!!
Beautiful office to complement the excellent care provided.
Hi Dr. Mallis - I am probably feeling the best I have in a long time. My energy is consistently better. I am motivated to get paperwork done at 9:30PM on a Sunday night. That is not the norm. Overall, feeling encouraged, hopeful and better all around. My husband says it is very noticeable. My mood is much lighter. Thank you so much!
Being a patient of Dr. Mallis for three years has enabled me to grow in so many ways - physically and emotionally. Some acupuncturists do not have a medical degree such as Dr. Mallis does which assists her in utilizing her knowledge and expertise to explain and interact with you while providing you with her services. My chronic pain and anxiety were the primary reasons for seeking her services. However, unfortunately, when a 2nd-3rd degree burn occurred on my arm, her medical knowledge and treatment regimen were indispensable to my healing process. Her techniques definitely augmented the healing of my burn. Traces of my burn are now negligible. Dr. Mallis' preliminary assessment of you is vital and comprehensive. She is thorough, gentle, knowledable and kind. These are essential traits when describing a successful acupuncturist. I am dellighted to have found such a dedicated professional in my life. I hope you have the same opportunity.
I have been a patient at SearchLight Medical since 2010. Although I live over 50 miles away, I chose Dr. Mallis because she is a Board Certified Medical Doctor as well as a licensed acupuncture provider. Dr. Mallis has treated me successfully with acupuncture for chronic depression as well as joint pain (hip & shoulders), sinusitis and leg cramps.
Dr. Mallis is compassionate and professional. She has a remarable commitment to her work and her patients' well-being. Each treatment is based on the patient's needs at that moment in time - this is not a "one size fits all" approach!
I recently tried reflexology - provided by Maggie, a licensed nurse who works with Dr. Mallis at SearchLight Medical. Both Maggie & the reflexology massages are delightful! It's a pleasure to recommend Dr. Mallis & SearchLight Medical!
I am a psychotherapist and have been seeing Dr. M for about a year doing acupuncture. I originally came for some physical complaints...IBS..shoulder pain...sinus pain. Those problems were much lessened, but I would say that underlying my physical issues were deep emotional issues...and much to my joy and surprise, I have truly changed in very profound ways. I am thrilled that I was able to have an unconventional treatment experience that kind of solidified my years of psychotherapy. And of course I need to mention that I love Laurie, find her wise with a great sense of humanity and humor.
